Review: Vampirella - Feary Tales #1
I came into this issue with the hope of something fun and frolicking, a nice complement to the monthly and more serious Vampirella title that has been pretty good for the most part. After reading the first few pages however, I was angered as I discovered a terrible truth…This one begins after the as yet released Vampirella #6 and arc finale occurs.
Review: Army of Darkness: Convention Invasion
Ash goes metafictional in this adventure when he gets recognized by some fans and attends a Comic Con. Fans recognize him, and the story gets going. Hijinks ensue when a dark cosplay sorcerer uses the Book of the Dead to possess Ash and unleash some Deadites on the throngs of fanboys and fangirls.
Review: Dark Engine #3
Like I said in my review of issue one (and as I would have said in my review of issue two, had I been stationary long enough to write it), Dark Engine is, and was always going to be, a contentious book. Like what I hold to be its stylistic, if not thematic cousin book, Prophet, this is a series that will demand much from its readership, like a strong stomach and a stern sensibility. But most of all, this is a story that requires patience.
Group Review: Wytches #1
There’s no denying that Scott Snyder is a “hot” name in the world of comics, so it only makes sense that we would tackle his newest series Wytches from Image Comics. You may recall that Image was pretty pumped to have this series and it seems like a few of our writers were as well. That said each of the writers participating in the group review are going to give you their score and thoughts for the first issue.
Review: Death Vigil #4
The average comic fan is probably going to be a little frustrated with this issue, which will be their loss. While the story only inches forward slightly, there’s two pretty big reveals in the issue.
Review: Goon: For Want of Whiskey and Blood
This 128-page collection of The Goon issues 42 through 45 also includes a great sketch gallery—as if you did not have enough reason to read Powell’s masterpiece. If you are not of the kind to collect individual issues, here’s the chance to grab a block of the finest stories and sequential art to grace the medium of comics.
Review: Danger Girl: Mayday #4
Man just seeing this cover gets me ready for Danger Girl. It is intense and with three chicks ready to rough and tough with a bullet bouncing off of a knife doesn’t get you excited for this comic, nothing will. I feel like it has been so long since I read Danger Girl...which is a good thing. You never want me to say, “Man, didn’t I just read this.” So thank you IDW for keeping Danger Girl an arms’ stretch away.
Review: Thomas Alsop #5
Ah man, this issue… this issue. If you haven’t fallen in love with BOOM!’s Thomas Alsop then you are missing out on what might be the best series they’re publishing. It’s very difficult for me to decide what their best title actually is, but hands down this is always going to be fighting for the top spot.
Review: The Death-Defying Doctor Mirage #2
This has been quite the week for comics. I was extremely happy to see the return of The Death-Defying Doctor Mirage as I was privy to an advanced look at the first issue and had to wait even longer to read this issue.
Review: Teen Dog #2
As you know from my last review, I could not stop raving about Teen Dog and how clever it was. It took simple ideas from a teenagers’ head and made it into a comic.
Review: Killogy – Halloween Special
Sometimes in life, you pick stuff up on a lark, without knowing really why; and I’m not just talking about sexually transmitted diseases or knife-wielding drifters. No, I’m talking about comic books. Case in point: Alan Robert’s Killogy Special Halloween Special One-Shot.
Review: Hexed #3
Well it’s settled… I’m going to have to read the first volume of Hexed. I don’t know what it is about this series, but it’s become one of my go-to books each month. Dan Mora’s artwork is definitely a contributing factor, but I’m also jealous of the world that Michael Alan Nelson has created. Jealous because it’s simple and yet tickles the imagination with each layer that’s added.
Review: Blacksad - Amarillo
The third collection of Blacksad by Juan Diaz Canales and Juanjo Guarnido is out, and you should all be praising the idea of a benevolent god that something like this book can exist. Blacksad: Amarillo isn’t better than the first two collections, but it’s still an incredibly solid entry in an already stellar series.
Review: Grendel vs. The Shadow #2
In the last issue of Grendel vs. The Shadow the two characters came face to face for the first time on the very last page. It was a wonderful tease because the build up to their first encounter came in the form of a well-plotted story; so that when they did meet it made perfect sense.
Review: Zombie Tramp #3
After the last issue I’m excited for another issue of Zombie Tramp. I honestly wasn’t too impressed with the debut issue of this series, but it’s okay because it’s like a good TV show; terrible pilot, great rest of the season. So what happens when Janey comes face to face with the King of Rock’n’Roll?
Review: The October Faction #1
As we amble closer to Halloween, two things are almost certain within the comic book community. First, everyone will be changing his or her name to something “spooky” on Twitter; and second, we are guaranteed a whole “slew” (pun intended) of new horror books. As ever, it’ll be difficult to parse through the Onslaughctober, but there are a few standouts, for one reason or another, that I am more than happy to recommend, starting with The October Faction.
Review: X-O Manowar #0
My rules for annuals, zero issues, or one shots is that the comic needs to either alter the characters in some substantial way or provide a deeper look into the life of the character not available in the monthly run.
Review: Black Science #9
Being that I was on my own trans-world jaunt this past summer, I wasn’t able to cover Black Science #8. That’s a damn shame, because in my opinion, it was one of the best issues of this Image series to date.
Review: Dead Letters #5
Part of the reason Dead Letters has been so much fun for me is that each issue manages to take a trope of the noir genre, of the hard-boiled crime stories of yore, and make them fresh. It’s tough to watch The Maltese Falcon these days for anything other than academic purposes; Dead Letters reads like a breeze.
Review: V Wars #6
V Wars has gone a tad of a roller coaster ride. When it is good, the comic really is brilliant and a new take on the whole vampire vs. human debate.
