Review: Criminal Macabre – The Third Child #2

Wowzers this issue packs a punch. There was a time in which Steve Niles could do no wrong and took the comic world by storm. Now I don’t think he’s lost a step, but with any creator you become exposed to a large body of their work and they either have to evolve at a faster rate or you need to limit your exposure.

Review: Doomboy

Ok so last issue, Old Hob introduced us to two new mutants he has created. I don’t know exactly how I feel about more mutants coming into the comic, but it was pretty much the only way to go with Hob taking some ooze and Splinter’s blood.

Woodcutter Mosaku brings his apprentice Minokichi up into the mountains to gather wood. A blizzard rolls in, and the two must find shelter in a cave. The old man regales his apprentice with stories of the Snow Witch that causes such storms. As the two men sleep, the Snow Witch appears and consumes Mosaku’s soul.

Review: Q2 The Return of Quantum & Woody #1

Sometimes, I feel as though I’ve been spoiled. See, I came to the Valiant party pretty late, having only flirted with the publisher’s stuff in the mid-to-late 90s, but jumping aboard with both hands and feet since its relaunch a few years back. Review: Chilling Adventures of Sabrina #1

I have never been a fan of Sabrina. Not the show, not the comics and believe me I have tried to enjoy both. Particularly with the show when I would watch it on Friday nights, but only because there was nothing else on and it was one of the nights of the week that I was allowed to watch a lot of TV as a kid. I think I made it one season before I decided to just give up on getting the most out of network television.

Review: Pirouette #1

I had no idea what to expect from this series going in. I’m not a big fan of clown related stories and no it’s not because of a fear of clowns. I actually find any attempt to make clowns creepy and scary to be the opposite. It’s a cheap scare at best. So when I saw a circus and clowns involved in this story I was hesitant to say the least.

Ash goes metafictional in this adventure when he gets recognized by some fans and attends a Comic Con. Fans recognize him, and the story gets going. Hijinks ensue when a dark cosplay sorcerer uses the Book of the Dead to possess Ash and unleash some Deadites on the throngs of fanboys and fangirls.

Review: Dark Engine #3

Like I said in my review of issue one (and as I would have said in my review of issue two, had I been stationary long enough to write it), Dark Engine is, and was always going to be, a contentious book. Like what I hold to be its stylistic, if not thematic cousin book, Prophet, this is a series that will demand much from its readership, like a strong stomach and a stern sensibility. But most of all, this is a story that requires patience.
