Review: King: Flash Gordon #2
Issue 2 does not live up to the promise of issue 1. The potential existed in issue 1 of a really great storyline that got cut short. This is what it got cut short for. Don’t get me wrong it’s an entirely serviceable issue. It kept me interested in the setting and the characters for another month but there’s just not a lot of meat on these bones.
Review: Holy F*ck #3 (Danger Zone)
My first draft of this review had a long rant about the fact that Action Lab books continue to ship back to back and blah, blah, blah. Is that this issue’s fault? No and so I said fuck that noise and started again.
Review: Adventure Time: Marceline Gone Adrift #3
Adventure Time: Marceline Gone Adrift is becoming more and more of a Major Tom story set in (and far, far above) the Land of Ooo, and both my David Bowie half and my Adventure Time half could not be happier.
Review: Shaft #4
You know what the best Shaft story I’ve ever consumed was? I’ve seen the movies, I’m aware of the character and the genre it’s in. It’s a genre I love and has created some very compelling media.
Review: Legenderry: Vampirella #2
I like the Legenderry world but it hasn’t quite earned the cache that the Pulpy-verse has so I’m not as willing to give it legacy points just yet.
Review: Black Science #12
Black Science would make for a great CW show, and I mean that as a compliment since I’m referring to Arrow era CW and not the Gossip Girl CW. This came to mind when I realized that despite its serial nature, many issues of Black Science seems like they monster of the week stories only rather than a monster each week we get to see a new dimension about every three issues rendered with immaculate detail by Matteo Scalera and colored by Moreno Disino.Black Science would make for a great CW show, and I mean that as a compliment since I’m referring to Arrow era CW and not the Gossip Girl CW. Review: Doctor Who: The Eleventh Doctor #9
Doctor Who: The Eleventh Doctor #9 was okay. I know that pretty much tells you everything you need to know, but I was very hopefully for this issue.
Review: Doctor Who: The Tenth Doctor #8
There isn’t much that I can say that will be new about this story arc for Doctor Who: The Tenth Doctor. I mean we’re in the meat of it and so it’s continuing on the logical path that it established in the beginning and that’s a good thing. In fact if it wasn’t then I’d have more to say.
Review: The Woods #11
I almost feel bad reviewing this issue of The Woods. It’s not because it’s bad, in fact it continues to be a fantastic read and one of my favorite comics being published. I think James Tynion IV deserves a lot of credit for making teenagers that are believable and that come from different walks of life.
Review: Rat Queens #9
After some technical difficulties and artist shake ups, Rat Queens is back! But don't worry the artist may be different but the book is still amazing. The pan dimensional flying squids are still attacking the city, and the Queens are still trying to recover from the physical and psychic attacks.
Review: The Double Life of Miranda Turner #6
Well The Double Life of Miranda Turner #6 definitely cranks things up a bit. I kept expecting for it to end just before the reveal, but it went there. I won’t spoil it because why bother, but the issue was definitely a good one for anyone that’s been following the series.
Review: Holy F*ck #2
Okay I hate that asterisk in the title so you will see me refer to this book uncensored which should come as no surprise on a site called “Comic Bastards.”
Review: Army of Darkness - Ash in Space #4
Once again we follow our dauntless protagonist Ash IN TO SPAAAAAAAAAAAAAACE on our way to concluding this story.
Review: Supreme Blue Rose #7
Supreme Blue Rose is a meaningless story. It is, to rip off a phrase from Seinfeld, a book about “nothing” - it shouldn’t even really exist, by nature; not unlike a blue rose. But just because something is immaterial or unnatural doesn’t mean it lacks value or beauty. After all, it’s been said that some of the best stories ever written are the ones that got erased.
Review: Altered States: Vampirella #1
Altered States, I guess, is the Elseworlds of the Dynamite universe. It’s good to have outlets to tell those random stories and take different approaches to characters.
Review: 2000 AD – Prog 1920
The Order and Survival Geeks were solid this week, but everything else dragged.
Review: God Hates Astronauts #6
Rejoice, fellow peasants! Yea, for though it has been a long two months, we now have not only another trade of God Hates Astronauts, but a brand new issue, printed in Ryan Browne’s nefarious laboratory, floating above Challenger Comics in Chicago, and flown by space badgers to your local store.
Review: Neverboy #1 (Dark Horse)
After talking to Shaun Simon at New York Comic Con I became very interested in Neverboy, his and Tyler Jenkins latest series from Dark Horse Comics. The premise is fairly easy to sum up if you already have read or know anything about the book.
Review: Big Man Plans #1
There are very few titles of comics that I would honestly say you “must read.” The reason being that there are so many comic genres most people still just expect superheroes and so dubbing anything “must read” usually falls on deaf ears. If you’re one of those comic book readers that still hasn’t discovered the wonderful medium waiting for you outside of capes, tights and leather then let me recommend you start your journey with Big Man Plans.
Group Reviews: HaloGen #1 & Descender #1
Wait what? Yeah we’re trying something new this week as two books that kind of vibe the same were released from different publishers. The way this is going to work is that each participating writer (don’t worry it’s only a few of us) will give you our thoughts on each title so that we can compare and contrast all at once.
