Unboxing: Loot Anime – September 2016
By Dustin Cabeal
Got it on the last day! Still, counts right? First off, had a minor mess up in the middle of the video. Sorry, probably won't do it this way again because as you'll see, I didn't have the camera aimed where I fucking thought I did for about half the video. I will say, this is probably the best Loot Crate/Loot Anime I've gotten. If my brother wasn't a Bleach fan, I would have kept everything, but otherwise, I'm happy with what I got. I hope there's more like it in the future. Also, here's a picture of the watch since I didn't want to fuck with it while recording.
Review: Red-Eye Comics: Dead Days in Kowloon
By Dustin Cabeal
I’m a fan of Skuds McKinley. Yeah, that should take me out of the running on this review, but that’s not how Comic Bastards works. McKinley submitted Dead Days in Kowloon and let me know that Red-Eye is a vapor company that asked him to design six characters and make six comics about them, but that was the only correlation. He could do whatever with the characters and so here we come to Dead Days in Kowloon. Neo-Tokyo is dead. Long live Neo-Kowloon. What I mean by that is thank you, Skuds McKinley, for picking a city that wasn’t overplayed and over “Neo’d.” We meet Harvey Gomez, a man with a red hand as he’s on his way to a job. He’s a bounty hunter of sorts but referred to as a freelancer. He’s given a clean-up job, another freelancer fucked up and is now on the run causing the employer to send Harvey to retrieve the goods no matter what.
Review: Alexandra Forever: Evolution
By Dustin Cabeal
I judged this book by its cover… or rather it’s cover art… and then it’s art. It’s not typically a style of art that I enjoy, and so I admit that looking at 144 pages of it made me weary. But I ain’t no quitter when it comes to comics, and if I start reading something, I finish it. I’m really glad I did because Alexandra Forever: Evolution turned out to be a great read and introduce me to a rich sci-fi world that I would love to read more of. That said, you do have to hang in there until the second chapter to really unlock the charm of this story. Until then, I was confused and wondered if I would even bother reviewing the book. Why? Because it’s batshit crazy.
Review: Delineate
By Dustin Cabeal
This is a weird book for me to review. I feel like I should like it more. It’s strange in and of itself which I usually like, and it’s created and published in my home state of Colorado. Looking back, I didn’t realize it would take me ten years to regret leaving, but that is not something you need to know for this review. The comic is semi-autobiographical. I feel like a question mark could be added at the end of that. Not all of the stories follow the creator/main character of Lonnie, but most of them do. Each page is a comic. It begins and ends there. Sometimes there’s one to three panels, but consistently there’s two. To put it another way, most of the comics have a set up and punchline.
Review: Realm of the Dripildofs #1
By Dustin Cabeal
Every read a comic and wonder what the hell you just spent your time reading? I can sum this issue up for you fairly easy, but if I were just to hand this comic to someone that doesn’t read comics they would likely be confused or even want to quit reading it. I hate to say it, but I wanted to quit reading it after about the fifth page. The first problem is the word “Dripildofs.” I feel like an asshole for even making you read that and say it in your head. I knew I was in for it based on the title, but I kept reading.
Call Me A Hypocrite, But I'd Still Wear This Josie's Shirt
By Dustin Cabeal
You may recall my not so negative, not so positive review of Archie's rebooted Josie and the Pussycats series yesterday. If you don't, read that here. At NYCC they have exclusives because everyone does and while most are variants and such, this shirt stood out. Becuase this artwork made me want to read the series. I love the art by Audrey Mok and so I would wear the fuck out of this shirt. I do wish it was on say a white, pink, orange shirt... anything other than black. It doesn't pop on black. If you're at NYCC it's $25 bucks for the Men's pictured above and the Women's V-Neck below.
NYCC 2016: BOOM! Picks Up A Matt Kindt and Tyler Jenkins Untitled Project
By Dustin Cabeal
I'm not going to lie, BOOM!'s "Road to NYCC" has been littered with the usual announcements. An ongoing WWE book? Not that different from SDCC. More Jim Henson? To be expected. And I get it, they need to hype books its the nature of the beast. I just haven't particularly gotten excited for any of them until this one. That said, I'm confused sometimes by this industry. I mean, it's Matt Kindt and Tyler Jenkins... what publisher would pass on a book from these two? None, but then how did BOOM! land them? I'm curious about their creator-owned deals, but I got a feeling I'm not the person they'll discuss that with.
NYCC 2016: Dark Horse Announces Empowered's Next Villain... Love
By Dustin Cabeal
I'm always excited for more Empowered. I wish it was ongoing, but I'll take it whenever Adam Warren is willing to make it. He's teamed up with Karla Diaz on art and her stuff is fantastic. It's perfect for the series and I am really looking forward to read the hell out of this series. This is probably one of my top announcements from NYCC.
Valiant Is Going All Out On Live-Action Ninjak Video
By Dustin Cabeal
If you're at NYCC you need to check this out. If not for you, then for me. I just hope that this is being used to light the fire on a live action movie because I would then ask Matt Kindt to write it and I'm not even in charge! Crazy right?! Here's some pics and a blurb from Valiant about it, but seriously, if you're one of the thousands of people at NYCC, check it out.
More Nerd Jackets To Keep You Warm On Those Lonely Winter Nights
By Dustin Cabeal
Fun.com is back with more comic book coats! You may recall this other post I did about their suits and these are in line with that. The big difference being that the "cosplay" snow coats actually work out pretty damn well. I still lean towards the "secret identity" style myself. I absolutely love that Justice League one. Not just the liner, but the style of the coat as well. If you have kids, then let them wear the cosplay stuff since that's the only time it's really cute on someone. For more, check out their page. In the meantime, I'm going to hope for more from Fun.com because I really like this new trend. It's way better than the shit we talked about on this week's podcast.
Preview: Leash Baby Kung-Fu #1
By Dustin Cabeal
Full disclosure, I know the writer of this book. He used to write reviews on this very site! He's since moved on to being a part of Legacy Rising comics which just launched last month. His own book, Leash Baby Kung-Fu, is launching at New York Comic Con in like thirteen days. He was kind enough to let me run the preview on the site and so here it is, Leash Baby Kung-Fu. If you like what you see it'll also be on Amazon/Comixology and if you want to pre-order the book here's the email: doug@legacyrising.com.
Review: Josie and the Pussycats #1
By Dustin Cabeal
Really the only thing to say about this book is that it’s okay. It occurred to me that I have never read a Josie and the Pussycats comic and so it at least succeeded in getting me to do that. I didn’t dislike it, but I didn’t like it either. It’s okay, but really shouldn’t we want something more from a comic? The premise is... Did you see the new Jem and the Holograms movie? If you did, wasn’t it like watching the Josie and the Pussycats movie? Which is what kind of happens here. Art imitating art… imitating art or something. Granted there’s only so much you can do with the construct of this brand. It’s an all women band, and their gimmick is “pussycats” which instantly makes it feel out of place in 2016. I don’t think people have called cats “pussycats” since before I was born and I’m no spring chicken.
Review: Witchfinder: City of the Dead #2
By Kaleb Herbert
Sir Edward is very similar to the Big Bad Wolf from The Wolf Among Us. They both are misunderstood by those around them, and they both are trying to help people in any way they can. It is quite the resemblance in looks as well in terms of their grittiness and rough exterior. Although both characters have essentially been outcasts within their society, it does not stop them from pressing forward and tackling matters at hand.
Review: Star Trek: Waypoint #1
By Dustin Cabeal
I know what you’re thinking. Why is Dustin reviewing another IDW title? WHY? Someone save the book, pull it from his grasp and prevent him from reviewing it. We have to save the score! He’s going to tank the score!! WHY oh cruel gods of comics would you let this man review a Star Trek book from IDW!?! WHY! JACK KIRBY!!! DITKO… THAT OTHER GUY! WHY? Which I can answer for you easily. This Star Trek book is unlike any other IDW Star Trek book they’ve done. I wish that the rest of their Star Trek books were this good, but I’ll just be happy for one and hope it bleeds into the rest.
Review: Generation Zero #2
By Kaleb Herbert
Grab the tallest ladder you can get your hands on because this story is getting deep. A little cheesy, but Lente keeps delivering a story that is honestly invigorating and keeps adding layer after layer. It is hard not to gobble up everything in this issue, with excellent artwork, incredible writing, and great story progression. Each character is getting a little bit of spotlight during this issue with a little background information, and personality development. This issue does a great job of not overwhelming the reader with new information, but rather gives the reader just enough to digest while also letting the reader feel good about knowing that more is coming with future issues.
Review: Wonder Woman #7
By Mike Badilla
I like Wonder Woman, but I find myself not reading it very often, which is why I chose to do this book. I also chose this book because of the cover; I have never seen a Wonder Woman book look like this. The art is very different, dark and detailed and a little gross, which intrigued me. We start out on issue 7, which of course means there is story that I will have missed out on, so let's continue anyways. We find our heroine, along with some kind of Cheetara-esque woman, breaking some people out from a cell inside of a cave.
