Review: Giant-Size Kung Fu Bible Stories
With a name like Giant-Size Kung Fu Bible Stories I’m sure you’re wondering what exactly you’re getting with this comic aside from a crazy title. Well, it’s an anthology by a lot of talented comic book creators and even a pretty famous animator. You may know him from such series as Batman: The Animated Series… that’s right Bruce Timm (who has done other comic book work in the past) has a story in this anthology.
Review: Ex-Con #1
When Dynamite first announced this series I wasn’t too excited and unfortunately it didn’t come around and hook me like I hoped it would. I want to talk about that cover to begin with because it’s ugly.
Review: Turok – Dinosaur Hunter #7
Where the first arc of Turok was a very encapsulated and small-scale arc (as small-scale as an arc can be with a bunch of velociraptors and a T. Rex, at least), this second arc has been a lot of decompression in terms of plot and expansion in terms of scope of the world. It’s been a little bit slower of a read, and it’s been a little less fun, but it’s been more interesting.
Review: Terminator: Enemy of My Enemy #5
I picked up on this miniseries after coming into the Terminator Salvation: The Final Battle title. I had been really hyped on that one. And reading the advance preview releases to this one kind…I thought that it might be worth a look.
Review: Headspace #4
Another comic this week has stumped me with its cover. I am assuming this is our serial killer, Max, but why the shadow? Why show him as a child? I have said it before that I want to dive deeper into the serial killer’s real life.
Review: Vampirella #4
Vapirella is back. And this time, she is taking out some of her more rare vampiric cousins as a means to build her strength and resolve in preparation to stop the Mark of Umbra who is described as Our Lady of Shadows and the Bride of the Apocalypse.
Review: Cloaks #1
I have this not-so-secret desire to learn close up magic and anytime I read a story or watch a movie about magic I consider purchasing one of those starter kits and learning a couple of coin manipulation and card passes.
Review: Nightbreed #4
Nightbreed hasn’t disappointed its readers by any means. I think Clive Barker is getting everything he ever wanted out of this story. Marc Andreyko captures these monsters and their representations in every character and every setting. It is very cool seeing this all come together.
Review: Usagi Yojimbo – Senso #2
In the second part of Usagi Yojimbo - Senso things are picking up rather fast in this book and the big reveal from the last issue was that there seems to be some sort of egg or ship that has landed right in the middle of the battlefield that both clans were fighting in.
Review: The Woods #5
Well this issue solidified my two favorite characters of the series. I was already leaning heavily towards Karen, but I wasn’t all in on Sanami. After this issue though, I think these girls stole the show and have moved into “breakout character” territory. I’m sure that won’t stick because the next issue is likely to rotate and make another character someone else’s favorite, but that’s why The Woods is one of BOOM!’s top titles.
Review: Lumberjanes #5
Are we already here? Issue 5?! So much has happened since we first met our campers; everything from subliminal messages in the sky to Yeti guards and now bloodthirsty raptors.
Review: Nightworld #2
Nightworld is so perfect for the fall season. I know it’s only September but it gets me in the Halloween mood. It’s not the horror fest type but it’s haunting and a little creepy with some humor thrown in. It’s about demons fighting for a soul key and everyone one’s got their own hidden agenda!
Review: Red Sonja: The Black Tower #1
I have had great joy in all the wonderful comics coming out by Dynamite relating to Red Sonja. They have taken the character that was always a little rough around the edges, and gave her some serious substance.
Review: Grimm Tales of Terror #2
What a difference an issue makes. The initial offering from this new title stumbled out of the gate. While the second chapter has its flaws, the presentation as a whole makes for a much better read.
Review: God Hates Astronauts #1
In most of my reviews, I like to go back to the old dramatic-criticism-toolbox and talk about how the writers and artists have created worlds for these books to live in, and these worlds have rules; the fun is in watching someone try to break the rules.
Review: The Death-Defying Doctor Mirage #1
The mystic side of the Valiant Universe is one that I like. It’s very different from the other mystic arts of other established comic universes, but it never forgets the most important thing… it should be dark and scary.
Review: Concrete Park #1
It’s been a while since we last saw Concrete Park, but it’s back with a mini-series all to itself. Previous the series appeared in Dark Horse Presents and eventually the story there was collected into a one-shot issue as well.
Review: Grendel vs. The Shadow #1
Like most people when I learned that Matt Wagner was making a new Grendel comic I became excited, but I was more excited to see that it was crossing over with The Shadow. If there’s one creator you want handling such a feat it’s Wagner.
Review: Nailbiter #5
I love reading this comic. I truly love getting it every month and seeing what unfolds next. Some comics over time just fade away, but I couldn’t see myself ever getting sick of Nailbiter. The story captures that creepy mood that I miss from shows like Dexter. It really brings the psychopath into full view.
