Review: Wonder Woman #39

Issue 39 is the second in what I assume are three issues involving the Silver Swan. When we left off a crushed fan named Vanessa had cracked under her disappointment of being abandoned (how she saw it at least) and became the villain the Silver Swan. She attacked and killed a family that Wonder Woman had recently saved, knowing that she would rush to check on them when she heard something was wrong (much like she had done for Vanessa in the early days after her own rescue). It’s understandable how to someone like Vanessa this would only add fuel to the fire.

Review: Wonder Woman/Conan #5

Gail Simone’s Wonder Woman/ Conan title has taken us back into the original age of heroes, one full of bloody battles, mythical creatures, and ancient prophecies. Issue 5 continues the journey of The Amazon princess and her unlikely companion, Conan the Barbarian. On the surface, both are dark-haired and muscular pictures of strength, but their personal codes of honor could not be more divided. The title’s fifth installment solidifies the stark contrast of Diana and Conan. Diana, a believer in truth, honesty, and loyalty dumbfounds Conan by her interactions with the world around her. Something as simple as dismounting their horses for the night draws a clear line between Diana’s faith and Conan’s hardened worldview.

Review: Batman #39

Issue number 39 of Batman kicks off a new plot arc, and Wonder Woman fans will be pleased to see she is included (as is made obvious by the cover of this issue). I’ll confess that I didn’t think much of the title when I first saw it, the Secret of the Eternal Vow, but having fully read the issue I realize it carries a lot more weight than I would have originally assumed. I’m anxious to see the next issue, as not only do I want to see the conclusion, but I want to see the repercussions to said vow.

Review: Wonder Woman #38

The latest issue of Wonder Woman started off on a different tone; it’s told from the perspective of one of the (many) people Diana has saved. Like many people who have been saved by Wonder Woman, she met her on what was one of the worst days of her life. Unlike many, she was pretty okay with things; she survived, and she got to meet her hero. What more could a girl ask for?

Best Movies of 2017

Review: Wonder Woman #37

Issue 37 brings a conclusion to the Children of Gods plotline, though I very much suspect this will not bring an end to the Darkseid plot (there’s no way they’re taking him down in a single issue, even with daddy dearest tagging in). For those that need a recap; last issue left us with Jason weakened (from using too many attacks) Diana likewise (Darkseid turned her into a snack) and Zeus arriving to beat the snot out of Darkseid. Finally! The fight I’ve been waiting for! (Ok, not the exact fight I was waiting for, I just want to see Darkseid get curb stomped).

Review: Wonder Woman #36

Now that we’ve finished catching up with Jason’s backstory (thank you for that, issue #35), we’re back to the main plot once again. The scene opens with Diana chained up to a stone pillar while Jason monologues (though not as verbosely as a villain can). He (or maybe it was Grail) somehow managed to find an ancient Beachhead from New Genesis. It could even be an earlier world, who’s to say?

Review: DC Holiday Special 2017 #1

It’s December, so that means ‘tis the season for holiday specials like this one, and ‘tis the season for starting reviews off with the phrase “’tis the season.” In the wake of Rebirth last year, I was looking forward to DC’s DC Rebirth Holiday Special #1. It seemed like a great way to celebrate the season and the overall success of the relaunch. Unfortunately, if my LCS had gotten any copies (I didn’t ask, but I’m sure they did), they’d sold out of them before I got there. This was also before I started reviewing for Comic Bastards (if only barely), so I didn’t have access to any review copies. Oh well, I told myself, and I figured it maybe wouldn’t have turned out to be that good of a read anyway. In retrospect, that seems like an unnecessarily sour attitude to take during the most wonderful time of the year. And, the best way I can think of to make up for that is to take an optimistic look at DC Holiday Special 2017 #1.

DC’s New Talent Showcase is an idea that the president of DC Entertainment, Diane Nelson, came up with as a way of showing off some of the recent students from their Talent Development Workshops (which sounds fantastic). The shorts in this issue are from the 2016 class, as the 2017 one only just wrapped up.

Review: Wonder Woman #35

Fans of Jason should rejoice, while those of you that aren’t fans of the Wonder Woman’s brother plotline will probably be less than thrilled about this issue; the entirety of it is spent on Jason and his past. It goes without saying that Jason lived a very different childhood from Diana of Troy. Unlike Diana, Jason could not be hidden among the Amazonians (a boy would stand out quite a bit) and thus had to be whisked away to earth. But we know all that already, courtesy of the last issue. This issue aims to show us more of the details of his life (and presumably to help explain the choices we’ve seen him make).

Conan has a childhood crush on Wonder Woman… that’s sadly all you need to know about this first issue of what is a decently large crossover. A crossover that I don’t particularly understand other than when you take a deeper look at Dark Horse’s dwindling amount of releases you can’t help but wonder if their crossovers are keeping them from sinking out of premiere status.

At one point, we were all convinced DC was never going to see real success with their superhero and comic movies. Marvel was hitting homerun after homerun and DC was left in the dark. Sure, they may have been selling tickets, but that was because dedicated fans were prepared to offer them chance after chance. Then Wonder Woman came along and changed everything.

Mad At Joss Whedon For His Wonder Woman Script? Okay, but Maybe You Shouldn’t Be

Everyone is high on Wonder Woman at the moment, and that’s great, it’s actually long due, but as fans tend to do they want to digest everything imaginable for a character after falling in love with them on the big screen. I get it, some people just want more media to digest, but only if it’s in movie format. Instead of reading a bunch of great Wonder Woman comics, people got a hold of Joss Whedon’s unproduced Wonder Woman script from 2007. The differences in quality and message outraged the internet. Which isn’t surprising, but let’s look at this for a moment.

Originally I had hoped to write this review before the Wonder Woman movie released, but a nasty bout of the flu and the timing of my vacation dictated that I would instead write this review now. When it comes to reviewing a product there are several questions that you must ask yourself along the course of the review. These questions are how any reviewer worth a damn will give you a solid, unbiased review. At least in my opinion.

Review: Wonder Woman - Annual #1

I like Wonder Woman, I like who she is and what she stands for and find her to be a good role model. She stands side by side with Superman and Batman forming a trinity of super hero awesomeness. Wonder Woman Annual #1 comes out at a perfect time as the Amazonian princess is also coming to the big screen in her own movie and I feel this book is an excellent collection of short stories that anyone can can enjoy. You do not need to read any prior comic to understand what’s going on, this is great for anyone who is maybe only discovering the character for the first time thanks to the movie or who is like me, a casual fan who still enjoys the character. While it does help to have at least some knowledge of the DC world, the writing no way depends on you having this which is a strong point.
