SDCC 2016: Fantagraphics Debuts New Titles

There's a few books here I'm interested in for sure, but what I really want is that snazzy as fuck pin. Damn that shit is cool. From Fantagraphics:

Meat Cake BibleMeat Cake Bible By Dame Darcy

Dame Darcy is one of the sui generis artistic talents of the past two decades — musician, actress, fortune teller, dollmaker, Gen X/feminist icon, and last but not least, cartoonist to the core — and has been bewitching readers for more than 20 years with her neo-Victorian horror/humor/romance comic Meat Cake. Alternating between one-off (often cruelly tragic) fairy tales and ongoing romps starring her eclectic cast of characters, including Effluvia the Mermaid, the roguish rou. Wax Wolf, Igpay the Pig-Latin pig, Stregapez (a women who speaks by dispensing Pez-like tablets through a bloody hole in her throat), the mischievous Siamese twins Hindrance and Perfidia, Scampi the Selfish Shellfish, the stalwart Friend the Girl, and the blonde bombshell Richard Dirt, all delineated in her inimitable luxurious scrawl, Meat Cake is like a peek into the most creative, deranged dollhouse you ever saw. The Meat Cake Bible is the definitive collection of the series, collecting every story from all 17 issues (1993-2008) — including “Hungry is the Heart,” Darcy’s legendary collaboration with Alan Moore — as well as new stories from the unpublished 18th issue.

CosplayersCosplayers By Dash Shaw

Cosplayers is cartoonist Dash Shaw’s ode to that defining element of fandom, the “costume play” of so many anime and comic conventions. Artfully celebrating both the culture’s obvious theatricality and uniquely D.I.Y. beauty, as well as its often awkward conflation of fantasy and reality, Cosplayers explores these delicate psychological balancing acts via a series of seven interconnected short stories surrounding two talented young women who combine their love of cosplaying with their love of social media and film in order to deepen their relationship with the popular culture they celebrate. Cosplayers depicts their stories in an affectionately funny way, celebrating how much more inclusive and humanistic fandom can be than most of the stories and characters it is built upon. Featuring plenty of easter eggs for fans of the broader culture as well as being the perfect entry point for those completely befuddled by it, Cosplayers is another distinctive, instant classic from one of the most acclaimed voices of his generation, and will be released around the same time as Shaw’s feature directorial debut, the independent animated feature My Entire High SchoolSinking into the Sea starring the voice talents of Jason Schwartzman, Lena Dunham, Reggie Watts, Maya Rudolph, and Susan Sarandon.

Garden of FleshGarden of Flesh By Gilbert Hernandez

As only the unfettered Id of Gilbert Hernandez could conceive,Garden of Flesh is a sexually explicit retelling of the story of Adam and Eve up to Noah’s Ark. Hernandez presents a straightforward adaptation of the Bible parable, but one that also blurs the lines between erotica and pornography, as only Hernandez can. In the Garden of Eden, where Adam and Eve are youthful and beautiful, is sex is a source of happiness, even when it’s psychologically and spiritually fraught? Leave it to Hernandez to explore the story of original Sin from a perspective you didn’t get in Sunday school. As an added bonus, longtime Love and Rockets fans will recognize some beloved characters/actors portraying key players.

Hip Hop Family Tree 4Hip Hop Family Tree Book 4: 1984–1985 By Ed Piskor

Book 4 of the best selling series showcases: The rise of Def Jam records! The birth of Dr. Dre’s record career leading to Straight Outta Compton! Introducing new branches on the tree such as Will Smith, Salt N Pepa, Rakim, and Biz Markie. Hollywood also takes notice and releases loads of films like Breakin', Breakin’ 2: Electric Boogaloo, Beat Street, Krush Groove and more, all highlighted within this jam packed edition.

Hip Hop Family Tree 3-4Hip Hop Family Tree Gift Box Set: Book 3 & 4 By Ed Piskor

We are releasing our gift box set of Books 3 and 4, in time for the holidays. Exclusive with this box set is Piskor’s crash course comic, Understanding Hip Hop and Comics, a documentation of how the two media have intersected over the past 40 years, spanning graffiti, to album covers, and to actual comics collaborations between cartoonists and rappers.

Otherworld BarbaraOtherworld Barbara By Moto Hagio

In the latest English-language release from one of the most influential manga creators of all time, Tokio is a “dream pilot,” a detective who enters criminals’ dreams to discover their motives. While investigating Aoba, who killed her parents and ate their hearts when she was nine, he discovers a phantom island named Barbara. Then there’s a mysterious and missing geneticist, an eccentric clergyman, a grieving grandmother granted temporary youth, a psychologist killed by a freak tornado… Hagio offers a sci-fi explanation for these seemingly random paranormal elements, and makes it all matter with believable characters in complex and subtle relationships. Fantagraphics Books is proud to present the first volume (of two) of Moto Hagio’s Otherworld Barbara, which won the “Nebula Award of Japan” (Nihon SF Taishō Award) in 2006.

Real Deal ComixReal Deal Comix By Lawrence Hubbard and H.P. McElwee

Real Deal Comix trades in what it calls the genre of Urban Chaos — a satiric depiction of the madness that occurs in the urban centers of America. Each story details the everyday struggles of the urban dwellers who go off on each other out of the rage and futility that their lives bring them. These people live on the edge of a precipice, where everyday tasks like going to the store or buying gas requires a stand-or-back-down attitude to survive. Every story ends in mayhem. Join G.C, Ace Brogan and Slick Willie in their adventures in da’ hood, and remember, they live a real man’s life: no matter what, they never back down. Real Deal Magazine (“More Rage per Page, More Slaughter for your Dollar”) was a self-published independent comic book created in the 1990s by Lawrence Hubbard (a.k.a “Raw Dog”) and H.P. McElwee (a.k.a. “R.D. Bone”) and inspired by magazines like Mad and traditional superhero comics but satirizing Blaxploitation movies with a cast of convicts, hustlers, drug addicts, crack whores, car thieves, and murderers. Real Deal has achieved cult status over the years, especially among underground artists and counterculture circles, and has even been featured in a line of t-shirts from Stüssy, but has never been collected… until now.

Blubber #3Blubber #3 By Gilbert Hernandez

Unleashing the unfettered Id of the great Gilbert Hernandez! Absurd, explicit, and profanely comical, Blubber makes all other comics blush. Pupusi (last seen in Gilbert’s Garden of the Flesh) gets it on with a hideous monster, a couple of lustful faun follow suit, an alien takes a substantial bowel movement, a guy with a large member gets it on with a little alien, and so much more!

SDCC 2016: BOOM! Announces 'Warlords of Appalachia' Which Is Fun To Say

At first read this is just Escape from New York plus... well I'm not going to say the political candidate's name because it's like one of those myths in which saying the name gives them some kind of real world power... Okay, it's Drumpf. What stood out to me after the really uninspired plot was how stacked this main character is. I mean he's basically a video game character that's maxed out his skill trees... like all of them. He's a mechanic... he's a former medic... a former MMA fighter... just put that he's has a gold medal with a bow and arrow and that he brews his own beer, making him the ultimate man! That art looks good, but this is this writer's second "look how fucked up America could be in the future" comic and that doesn't bod well with me. We'll read it to find out though. From BOOM! Studios:

The simmering tensions of a range of current issues, including religious liberties, gun control, and international concerns, boil over at the same time with a new president at the helm, causing a second U.S. Civil War. The New Confederacy is crushed but Kentucky holds out, not recognizing U.S. sovereignty. It is during this tense situation that Chess, the 13-year-old son of Kade Mercer—a mechanic, former National Guard medic, and former MMA fighter—is captured by forces sent by U.S. President Roth, causing Kade to rise up and become the first feudal warlord of Appalachia.

SDCC 2016: BOOM! Picks Up Namesake

If you follow comic news you're probably wondering how Steve Orlando is releasing this comic with BOOM! when he signed an exclusive contract with DC... well, behind the scenes comics are planned months and sometimes years ahead. I've read countless times of creators pitching the same work over and over and retooling it until it gets picked up and wham... slapped on the release schedule nine months later. It's just one of the weird things about the comic industry. Also, I'm going to read the fuck out of this book. Sounds good! From BOOM! Studios:

Namesake is a four-issue limited series by Orlando and artist Jakub Rebelka about Jordan Molossus, a young man with an unusual mission: He is tasked with delivering the remains of his deceased fathers—contained within two enormous urns—to their final resting place, which happens to be a place called Ektae, a world that interconnects with Earth for seven days every seven years. This fantasy epic is as much about Jordan's commitment to his family—no matter how weird or nonsensical his obligation may be—as it is about his journey, which is littered with twists and turns galore.

SDCC 2016: I'm Drooling Over This Snotgirl Variant Which Is Weird Right?

If you haven't already read my glowing review of Snotgirl #1 then you should just do that. Don't worry, it's spoiler free. I'm not big on convention exclusives. By that I mean I don't buy them, but I get that they're fun and when you're at a con, ten bucks for a different cover really isn't a big deal when you're spending thirty on cafeteria food and another forty on bottle water. I've spent ten bucks on total bullshit at a con so I'm not opposed to it. I just don't do it anymore.

That said... I would buy the fuck out of this cover. Bring a bag and board if you're going to pick it up.

SDCC 2016: BOOM! Picks up Mega Princess

Not that this doesn't sound appealing to certain readers, but wow have the BOOM! announcements been less and less exciting since starting with the WWE. None of the creators they're grabbing are what you would call "unavailable" and really nothing is exciting. Why they lead with their biggest announcement is just baffling to me.

Mega Princess by writer Kelly Thompson (Mighty Morphin Power Rangers: PinkJem and the Holograms) and artist Brianne Drouhard (Harpy Gee) will amuse and delight readers in the story about the Titan Kingdom's Princess Maxine (Max, for short), who, for her 10th birthday, is endowed with the gifts of EVERY princess by her fairy godmother! This all sounds a lot cooler than it actually is, in Max's opinion—she doesn't need to sing on key or feel a pea under 20 mattresses, she wants to be a detective! But at least the power to talk to animals is useful, although she quickly discovers her pony, Justine, is downright saucy. When Max's little brother, Prince Robert VI (better known as Baby Bobs), goes missing, Max and Justine are on the case, and her new Mega Princess powers just might come in handy after all!

Get Some Zombie Tramp Goodness at SDCC 2016

If you've followed the site in past years usually around this time you see a slew of SDCC posts about the exclusives and such. Well they're a lot of work to post and no one seemed to give a damn and so I decide to skip them or just post segments of the announcement that interested me. Basically because I have no real interest in talking about something that I have no real interest in. Hence why I'm actually posting something about Zombie Tramp, because I have an interest (You should read my last review... read the last two actually). Here we are then, Action Lab/Danger Zone's SDCC exclusives that I actually want. Two variant photo covers and a statue. At least I can see what they look like. If you're going to SDCC and reading this post because you're a Zombie Tramp fan, then check it out.

SDCC 2016: BOOM!'s Road To Comic Con Starts With The WWE

I have lots to say about this, but I also do this thing each week called a podcast and so I'm going to save it for that rather than spend a lot of time typing when you're just here for the juicy stuff. Juicy stuff below. Also... damn BOOM!, you better have something big to finish with. From BOOM!

We have partnered with WWE for new comics! We will launch the initiative at Comic-Con with a set of six, blind-bagged, one-page comics ($5 each, for sale at the BOOM! Studios booth #2229) titled WWE: Then. Now. Forever. Each comic will feature a pin-up image on one side of a different wrestler and a one-page info-comic on the other side that explores that wrestler's background and history in the ring. Three of these comics will focus on current wrestlers (Now), two on retired favorites (Then), and one on a legendary WWE talent (Forever). A seventh one-page comic will be given out FREE to all attendees of our panel on the WWE comics (see below). Each info-comic is illustrated by Russ Manning Award nominee Daniel Bayliss (Kennel Block Blues,Translucid), colored by Doug Garbark, and lettered by Jim Campbell.

Real Stories of the Most Famous Comics’ Heroes

A lot of famous villains and heroes were created on the basis of real people with some great and exciting stories. Are you the next Superman?

Great people who became great superheroes

Can you believe that the most part of your favorite superheroes were ordinary people in the past? These are most famous individuals with unique characters and outstanding histories that inspired the World’s best animators to create a superhero characters. Let's get right into it.

The Joker

He doesn’t use cards to gamble in the real money casino, he kills a lot of people with help of them. Joker has been written off from Conrad Veidt, the famous German actor. And the impulse for creation of the most charismatic miscreant in the World was "The Man Who Laughs" film.

2016-07-04

Harley Quinn

Harley is a villain-girlfriend for The Joker, who was created by Paul Dini. Harley is a prototype of the character of Arlene Sorkin. Paul has created Harley Quinn just after release of the series “Days of Our Lives”.

John Constantine

Magician, swindler and detective John Constantine has become a representation of the English singer - Sting, as the creators of this cartoon were crazy about his work. Besides resemblance, John has borrowed the singer’s habit of smoking several cigarettes at a time.

Jonah Jameson

It is funny, but probably one of the most recognizable characters of comics - John Jonah Jameson has become a prototype of the head of the Marvel company- Stan Lee, who is actually that one who created the comics strip himself.

Magneto and Professor X

Characters of Professor X and Magneto have defended the rights of the ordinary people. It is not surprising, they have been sketched from their predecessors, the famous fighters for justice - Malcolm X and Martin Luther King, Jr.

Iron Man

Because of his popularity among Americans, Howard Hughes has inspired publishers of The Marvel to create the character of Tony Stark and stories about the Iron Man. He has become the top-famous character superhero in the comics industry.

Lucifer Morningstar

Neil Gaiman was trying to reshape the established character of Satan while adding a charm to it. His Lucifer Morningstar was awarded by the David Bowie features, who had charming bad boy features according to the author’s opinion.

Tintin

In 1928, a Danish student Palle Huld has traveled around the world in 46 days. With this act, he inspired a cartoonist Herge to create a comics character Tintin.

The Hellfire Club

The members of the fictional villain’s society who have fought with the X-Men were copied from publishers.

Darkseid

Supreme governor of the planet Apokolips, Darkseid is less humanistic prototype of the actor - Jack Pallense. But the true prototype of Darkseid was Adolf Hitler.

Do Want: Mondo's Ramona Flowers Figure

I'm a huge mark for Scott Pilgrim and I've actually previously already talked about this figure, but now it's here with pictures and that's something I can't pass up talking about again. I mean it has interchangeable accessories! I would actually open the box for this one and put it on display. Ideally by the graphic novels themselves, but then a small child would pick it up and drop it every day like he attempts to do with said graphic novels. It's $50 bucks for the regular and $55 for the Mondo exclusive so that's what anyone can get me for my birthday. Just saying.

Black of Heart on Kickstarter -- The Last Kickstarter

First we have some business to attend to. I've been burnt out on posting kickstarters because we've gotten so many in the past that it's hard to say what's good and what's bad and all that jazz. That and at one point we were getting more kickstarters than review submissions which was mind blowing. Lately, to help friends and creators that have been great to the site I've broke my rule and hey... maybe in the future I will again. It's not that I don't want to help, its that I simply can't. We weren't moving the needle on anyone's projects and that was a real bummer. When we're not actually helping then what's the point of spending the time writing something for it to be completely ignored by our audience? Basically, the audience spoke and I listened. [su_button url="https://www.kickstarter.com/projects/boh2/black-of-heart-graphic-novel?ref=project_link" target="blank" style="3d" background="#50f84c" color="#111010" size="10" center="yes" icon="icon: chain" icon_color="#111010" rel="nofollow"]Kickstarter Link[/su_button]

But I like Black of Heart. I read the first three issues and really enjoyed it. You can read my reviews if you'd like: Issue #1Issue #2 and Issue #3. I also like the creators. They're super supportive of Comic Bastards and so I want to help them with their final four days of their kickstarter. They're so close that they can taste it so give them a push. I'm taking the time to tell you because I want to help this kickstarter, just like the last few I've put on the site. I'm breaking my rule because I feel they're worth promoting so take a look and if you're not interested then at least tweet it and give someone else a shot. I'm sure the current supporters are really excited about it making it's goal so every little bit helps.

Preview Black Mask Studios First All Ages Book: Jade Street Protection Services

While I don't know exactly what broke Black Mask Studios' momentum (other than it being something to do with courts and shit), I do know that I'm excited to see them pumping out the books again. Which is why I'm posting a preview. Something I hate doing, but hopefully it'll get some eyes on their books. [su_quote]JADE STREET PROTECTION SERVICES is our first All Ages book, but it's All Ages done the Black Mask way. In this new series that mashes The Breakfast Club with Sailor Moon, Kai, Saba, Noemi, Divya, and Emma are (bad) students at Matsdotter Academy, an elite private school for magical girls. When they all meet for the first time in a totally unfair detention, these punk rock witch delinquents cut class and discover the fates Matsdotter has in store for them are even more sinister than they suspected. With JSPS, the creative team of writer Katy Rex, penciler/inker Fabian Lelay, colorist Mara Jayne Carpenter, and series cover artists Annie Wu and Kiki Jenkins channel Black Mask's edgy, subversive sensibility into a whipsmart adventure for delinquents young and old.[/su_quote]

Alright, internet group hug is over. On with the reviews!!!

This Doom Patrol #1 Solicit Is Pretty Magical

I was already all about DC's Young Animal from DC and Gerard Way. Frankly I think it's the bold idea that a big company like DC/WB should be doing because it's good for the industry. Take more chances and the rest will follow. Or better yet, give them something to copy because the industry is notorious for that as well. This solicit made me smile. It reminded me of why I like Gerard Way and it washed the taste of that horrible Killjoys book he co-wrote, out of my mouth. Read it and be delighted. Also... removable sticker. You just sold one print copy you normally wouldn't have. From DC:

The atoms are buzzing. The daydreams crowd sentient streets, and the creative team has been warned, “Turn back now or suffer the mighty consequence of sheer, psycho-maniacal mayhem.” Generation-arsonists unite—this is DOOM PATROL, and the God of the Super Heroes is bleeding on the floor.

Doom-Patrol-#1A blenderized reimagining of the ultimate series of the strange, DOOM PATROL combines elements from classic runs, new directions, and things that could not be. Our entry point is Casey Brinke, a young EMT on the graveyard shift to abstract enlightenment, with a past so odd that she’s not entirely sure what is real and what is not. Along with her partner, Sam Reynolds, the pair blaze a path through the city and its denizens, finding the only quiet that exists at 3am is the chaos of the brain. When the pair answer a hit-and-run call, they find themselves face to face with a familiar figure: Cliff Steele, AKA Robotman.

“It gets weirder from here,” writer Gerard Way had to say about the book, with artist Nick Derington gripping tightly on the wheel of the ambulance. The pair’s only communication? Shouting out of the open windows while at high velocity. Who needs a new roommate? Who names a cat “Lotion”? And when do we get to see all those muscles?

Find your answers inside the pages of this comic book, as we set the stage for new beginnings, as well as the re-introduction of some classic DOOM PATROL characters, including Niles Caulder, Negative Man, Flex Mentallo, and Crazy Jane.

The debut title of DC’s Young Animal line kicks off with a removable sticker on its cover: Pull back the gyro to reveal its secrets, but be warned—there is no turning back.

Jeffery Brown's Incredible Change-Bots Becomes Trading Cards

While this is more in a support of merchandise for a comic, it's still kinda cool. I used to collect comic book cards and still have all of mine. All of them. Waste of money in the long run, maybe, joyful to see now? Definitely. The project is put together by Christopher Irving so check it out.

https://www.kickstarter.com/projects/drawnword/incredible-change-bots-trading-cards

“As much as silly 1980’s cartoons defined my childhood, so did trading cards, making this the perfect combination - kind of like a robot, and I don’t know, a car or truck or some sort of vehicle.”--Jeffrey Brown

The Awesomebots want to tell the story of their fight with the Fantasticons as a blockbuster movie.

Unfortunately, Electronocybercircuitron credits ain't Hollywood money.

So they asked me to create trading cards! This set of 24 pieces of cardboard are taken from the Change-Bots graphic novels by cartoonist Jeffrey Brown (A Matter of Life, Clumsy, Vader and Son).

Margo Intergalactic Trash Collector "Uprising" -- Launches On Kickstarter

If you haven't already then be sure to check out our review for the first issue of Margo Intergalactic Trash Collector then you can click that link that you've already read past. Otherwise you might of noticed we don't cover too many kickstarters on the site anymore, but I liked Margo enough to help out the project which is already almost funded. Help it get there and yourself an indie comic. From Whiting Studios:

"After the success of the First Margo book, I set about the task of not only continuing Margo's adventures but to make Uprising bigger, bolder and better. And so Margo; Uprising came about. Uprising introduces a slew of new characters into the Margo universe, raises the stakes and danger that Margo finds herself confronting, and asks the question "How far would you go to keep this job?"

Upcoming and legendary artists have contributed to the Margo Uprising Kickstarter campaign. Artist Marcelo Trom (Zombie Tramp, Vamp Blade) is featured on the alternative cover and comic book legend Joe Staton (E- man, Green Lantern, Dick Tracy) contributed art.

"My Dad, Uncles, and Grandfather were all rubbish men, and as a kid, I would often work on the truck with them to earn money to buy comics. I grew up wanting to draw comics and started as soon as I could work a pencil. In pursuit of my dream, I moved to NYC to attended the School of Visual Arts. There I found others like myself, and together, we clawed our way into print. Over the years, I often imagined a female protagonist who picks up trash (sound familiar?) in space. She would face danger and fight hostile aliens, all the while working for a corrupt company. And so, Margo Intergalactic Trash collector was born. Her story has grown and expanded in ways I could never have foreseen. I was born in the silver age of comics, but am creating in the digital age of comics, and loving every minute of it!"

Jim Whiting's published work includes; numerous collaborations with writer Steve Niles. Night of the Living Dead, and Zombie War with Kevin Eastman.

Young Udo's first mission in the second world war is as a radio operator aboard a German U-Boat, patrolling the Pacific. In his personal effects, he carries a book banned by the Nazis. When the war hero and master of the vessel, Captain Kaleunt, tries to destroy it, it mysteriously reappears...

Archie Teases Betty and Veronica Clothing Line

This actually makes a lot of sense and cultivates that desire to side with either Betty or Veronica. Obviously it doesn't affect me any and my only hope is that it's not trash fashion or worse that fast fashion that's made in sweatshops. Otherwise I'm interested to see what they do and it's kind of a no-brainer.
