Review: Mind MGMT #10

Mr. Kindt you’ve done it again. There are two types of my Mind MGMT issues: one that is extremely good, but pisses you off because you can’t wait another month to read the next issue and then one that is so good that you want a month off to recover. This issue is the latter of the two. I think after this series is over my mind may in fact be mush or I secretly suspect that Kindt is brainwashing us all and figured out the exact number of issues it takes for total control to set in… thirty-six in case you were wondering. This issue is all about Duncan, who has been introduced in the series previously, but now explained at greater depths. The trick to reading this issue is that you need to read the liner notes before reading the page. Kindt actually pulls a tricky move and makes them the same color as the top notes which can make it easy to miss if you’re not paying attention. The liner notes are the thoughts that Duncan is picking up on and they actually build the scene differently if you read them first. There is also one hilarious thought of a celeb/P.I. reference that I particularly enjoyed and found to be delightful with its own multiple layers of meaning.

Duncan is a P.I. because he gets bored easily. He’s talking to a new client whose husband is cheating on her. He lays on the P.I. shtick as he takes the case and then heads to his favorite/routine bar to get into a fight. Time passes and the client’s husband arrives pissed off and barges into Duncan’s apartment. He sets the husband up so that he can be with his wife who he finds to be a bit unpredictable… which he likes. Soon though, their relationship becomes boring and predictable to him; so much so that he sets her up with a new man unbeknownst to her.

Mind MGMT #10 CoverOur band of ex-Mind MGMT employees and Meru attempt to find Duncan and it’s interesting because Lyme who is a total badass of the mind can’t get close to him. They lose him over and over even after learning his own predictable routine. Meru comes up with an idea to catch him by having them all stake out one of his usual places and Meru using a game of chance to give them all directions. It pays off as Lyme surprises Duncan by bumping into him.

This issue is just incredible. The opening was outstanding with the liner note thoughts feeding into the page and really giving the reader the same abilities as Duncan. That’s why I recommended reading that way because the intended purpose is insight. What an incredible reading experience. Meru’s role in this issue was huge and her idea in order to bump into Duncan was so clever and just an amazing scene in general.  Goosebumps draped my arm as I read the foot chase waiting for the outcome that I already knew was coming. Kindt’s formula was getting a bit routine as the last few issues had plenty of plot, but similar structures and formulas to the different issues. This issue started anew and it was great because of it.

Kindt’s style doesn’t change in this issue, but the coloring for the first half does. He relies on a lot of shading to give it a classic P.I. look and it genuinely changes the style of the story from the norm. I found the scenes to be striking and dramatic which also played against what the narration and liner notes were telling me. It was the perfect contradiction if you’re paying attention.

I’m very excited about the next issue, but I need time. If you were to tease me with the outcome today I would mentally shut down from over excitement. This is by far one of the best single issues of the entire series and I will not soon forget it. Kindt has raised the bar for himself and the next issue looks to be even better. If you’ve missed out on this series then start with the trade or better yet the hardcover and get caught up. Trust me when I say this, this is one of the best comics on the market… and no I’m not brainwashed… yet.

Review: Kiss Solo #2

Last time out we followed The Demon in his breakout tale.  This outing we get The Starchild.  Issue one did very little to develop the Demon character or provide some greater background to his character.  Does the Starchild get a better treatment?

Nope.

The story starts with a woman saying a prayer to the Starchild asking for safe passage for her husband who travels in space.  We shift back to the argument that led the man leave his wife and child to find fortunes elsewhere.

Dorn, husband and father, leaves to find a kill a monster named Cretong.  Starchild (Paul Stanley’s alter-ego for those who don’t have membership in the Kiss Army), acts like an omniscient god as he guides Dorn to face the meanie.  And Cretong, by the way, reminds me of Sarris from Galaxy Quest and a purple Hulk.

Just give it a little thought, and you can guess exactly what happens.

Tragically, the character gets a solo shot but does not get the necessary development or creative story that should come from such an issue.  I figured these comics would be revealing or have some origin story.  While they do read like some of the great DC annuals that made wonderful stories out of staple characters (like Flash), the writing provides cliché experiences with little or no gee whiz or WTF! Moments.

The shame of it is that the ongoing series has been imaginative and entertaining to a surprising and fulfilling degree.  These solo outings have been a series of missteps that fail what has been established in the regular IDW Kiss comics.

Review: Five Weapons #3

Five Weapons is definitely a guilty pleasure read for me. I’ve enjoyed it, but the formula is so transparent that it’s like playing hide-n-seek in an open field. While I didn’t mind it as much with the first two issues I had a hard time not being annoyed by it in this issue. I do appreciate the video game/kung fu movie feel in which the main character moves on to the bigger and badder boss battle, but because it’s painfully obvious while reading it’s almost comes across as uncertainty. Is this what the audience wants? Are they cool with that? We are, but the trick to hiding a formula is the approach. The ridiculous charm of something like Dragon Ball Z was that you never really knew when the actually battle would pop off or how long it would last. You just knew that it was going to be a long ass fight and that was part of the adventure.

As with the second issue we pick up with Tyler aka Fake-Tyler, heading into battle. He refuses to use a weapon for the challenge yet again even though it’s required to knock the opponent out of the circle. Rick begins going at him with his annoying sing-songy dialog while making constant mention of his lack of weaknesses. I won’t spoil what Rick’s weakness is in case you didn’t pick up on it in the last issue, but Tyler wins and the story progresses. Jade and Tyler begin hanging out and a romantic relationship hits the beginning stages. Tyler’s stalker Joon the Loon also begins to have feelings for Tyler, which grow even more as she begins to monitor him on behalf of the Principle.

As Fake-Tyler debates about telling Jade he’s a fake or not he finds her engaged in a conversation with Darryl the Arrow. He’s informing her that due to her class rank she’s the Queen of the annual spring festival. He then sets the stage for the next challenge that Tyler will have to face and that’s winning the King position for the festival and a kiss from Jade.

The dialog is the biggest down fall for this series. Because all of the characters are trying to one up each other in the cocky shit rankings, they tend to talk a lot and say very little. The other problem is that they all come across as the same character. With the exceptions of small speech mannerisms from Joon or Rick, they’re basically the same. Emotionally they’re all full of themselves and trying to be the best. Which does to an extent makes sense given the type of school, but Tyler’s character should be able to make them drop their guard. That’s done with Joon in this issue, but there are plenty of other characters that you’ll have to deal with.

Then there’s the whole, “I don’t need a weapon shtick” which was worn well in the first two issues. I get it already; we don’t need to be reminded by everyone that talks to Tyler. He either doesn’t want to use a weapon because it would decide the future for the real Tyler or more like… his father told him he can’t use weapons because of their lowly butler status. Even though half of the students there have the exact same back story of “my family is poor, I barely made it in.” It’s kind of a dumb school concept if no one can afford to go in my opinion, but it’s fake and I’ve yet to hear anyone mention an accountant at the school.

I don’t have any issues with the art and frankly I’m impressed with the amount of detail Robinson pumps into the panels. Things like bathroom signs, recycling bins and vending machines really build the realisim of the school. That actually helps the world feel a real, when it’s anything but. What honestly impresses me about Robinson’s art is the variety of the hair styles. Some of them are downright iconic like Principal O’s, but otherwise I’ve yet to see a style repeated. Even back ground characters have their own unique look. I know it seems kind of dumb, but if you look at superhero comics a lot of them are barely rocking a hair style from this decade and if it’s an older artist… forget it. For that I applaud this series.

I’m going to stick with this title because frankly it’s almost done so why not. Am I 90% sure of how it’s going to end? Yes, but I hope that there will be something redeeming along the way that will make it worthwhile. I’m not looking forward to the beginning of the next issue since it will have the resolution to this issue making it the same as two and three, but I’m hopeful the rest will add something to the plot as the series winds down. While I can’t stop reading this series I continue to find that I dislike all of the characters and that’s unfortunate since they’re the driving force behind the entire story.

Third Man of Steel Trailer Hits - Get Hyped!

Written by Guest Contributor: Jordan North

Warner Bros. just released the third Man of Steel trailer. I'm still a bit skeptical of getting too excited but I will say, this trailer makes it damn hard not to. The trailer starts with an awesome few seconds where we're treated to a look at some of Krypton's last hour. Snyder is doing a hell of a job, lasers fly, things explode and Jor-El looks appropriately downtrodden. We get some more of Clark questioning who he is and his place in the world, "Can't I just be your son?" and finally get to see Zod in all his glory. We also get a few delicious glimpses at the action we'll be treated to when Man of Steel drops on June 14th, and it is spectacular. Here's hoping this turns out to be the Superman film we've been wanting to see all these years as it certainly looks promising. Trailer after the jump.

Review: Marvel Knights Animation - Inhumans

The Inhumans is a title that really helped change the face of the current Marvel Universe. It made the Inhumans relevant and solidified the value of the now defunct Marvel Knights line of books. Shout Factory teamed up with Marvel Knights Animation to make what I can only describe as an animation using the motion comic format properly. I’m not a fan of motion comics as they look cheap and the voice acting is usually terrible, but I found with Inhumans that my lack of knowledge of the source material made it far more interesting; especially when supported by a great cast and animation. Marvel Knights Animation InhumansThe animation keeps Jae Lee’s original art, but rather than bending the drawing to form a 3-D visual one is actually created. The animation is broken up in the same amount of issues as the comic which was good and bad. When hitting play all you were still forced to watch all of the opening titles and ending credits and since it’s not extremely long it means that ever fifteen minutes or so you’re fast forwarding to the next chunk of the animation. It would have been ideal to have one large track on the DVD that removed the credits and left a quick bump in-between an episode’s opening, but that was not the case here.

The voice acting was actually very good and while I didn’t recognize any of the voices from other animations, that was a good thing. The narrator plays a huge role in driving the story forward and thankfully Eli Cabay does a great job with the role. The entire cast only consist of ten actors, so there are some that play more than one role but it’s never distracting or out-of-place.

Overall, I was actually really impressed with this animation and will definitely call it an animation. If motion comics had come out at with this level of production and quality then they might not be considered such a joke in the industry. As it stands though, this is well worth the $15 bucks you’ll pay for it. I even got my wife to watch it and she was on the edge of her seat waiting for Black Bolt to take action. On that note, this may actually be a great gate way for people to introduce their friends and loved ones to the world of comics.

Iron Jock: Iron Man 3 Posters by Jock That Are, and Those That Might Have Been

During my recent MEFCC interview with Jock, the talented artist of The Losers and Snapshot, he mentioned that he would be producing posters for the third installment in the cinematic adventures of Iron Man, but that it was a bit too early to announce. Wanting to keep the surprise, I swore myself to secrecy under pain of … well, nothing, Jock’s a really nice guy, actually. I just said I’d keep my yap shut.

Here they are now, though. The first image is the official poster that will be handed out at the midnight premiere of the IMAX show, while the others are ones that, for one reason or another, didn't make the final cut.

I personally think the one they chose is pretty damn sick, but it doesn't scream Jock to me. I prefer the ones that do, particularly those that show a flock of Iron Men blasting horizontally across the poster. I also dig the one with all of the armors bearing down on Tony.

But hey, that’s just me, what the hell do you Bastards think?

Thor: The Dark World Trailer Hits The Interwebnet

I'll freely admit that I enjoyed the first film. Sure it had terrible plot holes and his character learns his "lesson" after a thirty second conversation, but it had Branagh behind the camera and damnit if I don't enjoy his craft. This trailer on the other hand, deflated me instantly. With all the set pics and loose details, I was anticipating a sequel that was better. Instead this seems to be a vehicle for Loki more than anything else. I'm hoping that a second cut will sell me on the story more because right now it's transparent and not very interesting.

“Without the CBLDF’s work, I wouldn’t be making comics today,” said series writer and co-creator Tim Seeley. “Their efforts to speak out for creators and to push back when groups look to censor our stories make it possible for guys like me to create the stories that matter to us.  With the my home city of Chicago currently involved in banning the acclaimed graphic novel Persepolis, I’m glad to give back to help the CBLDF in their efforts to protect the freedom to read comics.”

REVIVAL follows the events following a day in a small Wisconsin town when the dead returned to life — not as zombies, but seemingly unchanged and ready to return to their lives. But as time goes on, it soon becomes apparent that their resurrections have changed “Revivers,” and Officer Dana Cypress, assigned to aid the feds in their investigation, will find that the ramifications of Revival Day touch her far more closely than she thought.

Guess Who Tweeted Storm's New Look For X-Men 3-1/2

When are movie studios going to ban twitter from their directors? Yup, this week Brian Singer tweets Storms new look. Last week it was Xavier and prior to that Iceman... kind of. Thoughts or do you even care still? Also you'd think the director would know not to leave so much dead space at the top of that photo.

Blue Water's Next Tribute is: Marilyn Monroe

Marilyn Monroe is one of the most beloved icons of our time-- the original blonde bombshell. She defined the term sex symbol and captivated the attention of the public with her beauty, her charisma, and her tumultuous life. She has inspired devotion and admiration among her fans at a level never before seen. Follow her story, from beginning to end, in Tribute: Marilyn Monroe.

Comedic writer Dina Gachman, who writes for Forbes, Huffington Post, Ask Men, Los Angeles Review of Books, and several other publications, and whose blog Bureaucracy for Breakfast was featured on both NPR and Chelsea Handler’s Borderline Amazing Comedy, writes the collectible comic book.  Nathan Girten, who has done comic book biographies of Julia Child & RuPaul, drew it. Cover art is by Rob Aragon.

“Before writing this book I just knew the basic perception of Marilyn Monroe: Sexy, bombshell, tragic life, and a legend. I read and watched everything I could on her, and the deeper I got into the research the more I came to understand what an intelligent and complex woman she was. I fell in love with her, and also realized that she desperately wanted to be taken seriously. The book is fun and lighthearted, but it's also an attempt to peel back the basic perception and see past the fantasy," said writer Dina Gachman.

“The Tribute line of comic books tells the stories of the classic entertainers that have passed on,” says Bluewater publisher, Darren G. Davis “It is a way for us to honor these people who have made a difference in the world.

Purchase the fun new release in print exclusively at Comic Flea Market at a retail price of $3.99:http://bit.ly/ZgGL60.

You can also buy a digital version for your iPad, iPhone, Nook, or Kindle at iTunes, Nook, Amazon, ComiXology, Iverse, Wowio, My Digital Comics, and more for $1.99.

Previous subjects that have been featured in the “Tribute” line include Elizabeth Taylor, Frank Capra, Michael Jackson and James Dean.  All of them can be found digitally on iTunes, Nook & Kindle, and in print at Comic Flea Market.

Bluewater biographies have drawn the attention of hundreds of news outlets, including People Magazine, Us Magazine, MTV, CNN, and The Today Show.

C2E2 '13: Israel Idonije Is Premiering The Protectors

Longtime Chicago Bears defensive end Israel Idonije knows a lot about heroics on the football field. Now he's bringing that sense of heroism to his first comic project, titled The Protectors, and he has the acclaimed creative team of writer Ron Marz and artist Bart Sears with him.

C2E2, held at Chicago's McCormick Place April 26-28, will mark the official release of the limited edition The Protectors issue #0, which is sure to be a collector’s item. Sears has created two covers for the launch, one featuring the heroes of the Protectors, and the other an extremely limited sketch cover of Idonije in his #71 jersey. Copies of issue #0 will be available for $10. Known widely for his charitable efforts, Idonije’s comic project will be no exception. Athleta Comics is donating a percentage of net sales to public libraries and to HERO Initiative, a charity providing assistance to comics professionals in need.

Athleta Comics will be located at Booth #903, and The Protectors team, including Idonije, Marz, Sears and Troy Peteri, will host a panel on Friday, April 26 from 2-3 p.m. in room W474. John Siuntres, Chicago radio host and the mastermind behind the acclaimed Word Balloon podcast, will moderate the panel. Also, Idonije, Marz and Sears will be available at the booth at various times throughout the show to sign issue #0, Protectors T-shirts and other items.

A fan of comic books since childhood, Idonije began creating The Protectors at Bears training camp in 2007, and went on to start Athleta Comics, a publishing company to appeal to sports fans and comic book fans alike. First announced at the 2012 New York Comic Con, The Protectors is Athleta’s first project – a comic series combining the worlds of sports and superhero adventure.

The Protectors are a chosen handful of athletes who learn they are blessed with more than elite athletic ability.  The narrative will grow into an epic story of cosmic proportions, with the world at stake. It’s no coincidence that Idonije is launching The Protectors in Chicago – it’s the city he loves and calls home and it is also the backdrop for The Protectors.

In March Athleta introduced The Protectors through a 20-day web rollout where the website featured a new comic panel each day.  The webcomic and many of the character bios can still be viewed free of charge at athletacomics.com.

“This is a project of love and one of the most exciting things in which I’ve been involved,” Idonije said. “To hold the actual graphic novel in my hands has been my dream since 2007 when I literally sat down with the concept in my head and began writing it on my notepad.  It’s been a long journey and I’m excited to be sharing it with the world.”

Sports and superheroes are a combination that has not always been successful in comics. But Marz believes this is the right creative team to make it work.

"Before I wrote comics, my first 'real' job was a sportswriter, so I'm familiar with both of these worlds," said Marz, whose long list of comics credits includes lengthy runs on Green Lantern, Silver Surfer and Witchblade. "I don't think The Protectors could have been written by someone who wasn't at the very least a sports fan. We intend to get all the details right, which is not something you see very often when sports appear in comics. Having spent a number of years as a sports reporter gives me insight into the sports themselves, as well as the reporter character in the series, Silas Simms. We want sports fans to feel like the sports action is genuine, and we want superhero fans to feel like they're getting a classic superhero story.

Artist Sears, who is known for his work on "Justice League Europe" and "X-O Manowar," among many others had turned much of his artistic attention toward video games and commercial art, but was lured back to comics for The Protectors.  "When you think about the statement, ‘pro athletes as superheroes’ that makes a whole lot of sense. The athleticism of the superstars in every sport is unbelievable, human beings with powers far above and beyond normal man. Every single time a pro athlete takes to the playing field he or she is ‘in it to win it’, exactly like every hero who stands up to evil,” said Sears. “We call our athletes ‘gladiators’ and ‘warriors.’ It’s not a stretch to think of them as superheroes. It’s very exciting to be involved in a project like this."

Idonije said, “First and foremost, I believe we did the story right. People from a variety of backgrounds will connect and enjoy the core elements of the amazing story of The Protectors. Also, the artwork is fantastic. We have a great team! To me, comics and sports should be a perfect union. In both worlds, we find characters we can live through, characters we love and support and with whom we connect.”

Rounding out The Protectors creative team are inker Mark Pennington, colorist Neeraj Menon and letterer Troy Peteri.

“I know the messages contained in The Protectors will really connect with people, as well as entertain them,” said Idonije. “I also hope this project will serve as an inspiration to anyone who desires to achieve something. Regardless of who you are, if you have an idea, you can achieve it.”

I Fixed Those New Thor 2 Pics For You

USA Today has some new Thor: The Dark World pics and they were pretty dull. I spiced them up and really there is no other story here other than a reminder that Marvel made a sequel because the first one did well enough in the theaters to warrant it. You've been reminded.

Bad News Everyone: Futurama Is Cancelled Again

EW has the exclusive where they actually talk to the producers who are anything but serious on the matter. The gist is that Comedy Central has not renewed the show and the final half of the seventh season will be the last. I remember when it was picked up by Comedy Central in the first place, I thought it was a terrible idea. I can prove this by asking you what day and time it's on? Point taken. Cohen and Groening remain optimistic about finding the show a new home and say that this is their best last, last season and that it would be ashame to end when they're hitting their stride... again. I'm bummed, but frankly I'm glad to see it off of CC and hopefully that a new network that won't bury it will pick it up.

Ninja Turtles Live Action Movie Now TMNT Live Action Movie

According to Geek Tyrant, this past week at Cinema Con a new logo (not the one shown) was spotted for the live action TMNT movie and it's no longer Ninja Turtles, but back to Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles. Clearly the studios listened to the fans even if Michael "I Enjoy Prostitutes" Bay didn't want to. This also goes along with the rumor that the script has had massive rewrites since leaking onto the internet, but with the bogas ass casting I still don't care. At least we can chalk one up for the fans, but I'm still not giving MB any money.

New Superman: Unbound Clip Focuses On Supergirl and Lois Lane

This clip is ah... pretty boring. It would have honestly been more interesting if Lois and Supergirl had had "the talk." Instead it's Lois discribing the view that all adults have towards teenagers and terrible game of hot potato. Lois is voiced by Molly Quinn Stana Katic from Caslte in case you were wondering. Is that show any good? Nah, don't answer that I'm not it's demographic so I'm sure I'd find it terrible and full of plot holes. The clip and some more screen shots are after the jump.
